What to wear for your senior portraits || Las Vegas Senior Photographer

Valerie Kay Photography is a Las Vegas family photographer, Las Vegas Senior Photographer, Colorado Springs Photographer, and traveling across the country.

Yay! You've booked your session for your senior portraits! Now to figure out what to wear.

Your senior portraits are one of the most important portrait sessions you will ever have. They say the trinity of important photos are newborn, senior, and wedding. You will be looking back on these for decades, showing your children, and your children's children, so you will want these photos to represent everything YOU!

Firstly, bring outfits.. LOTS of outfits! We may not have time to use them all, but having options to choose from will help with having flexibility. You might feel differently about an outfit on location than you did in the mirror at home. Bring outfits that fit your normal style. We want these photos to represent who you are here and now. However, bring accessories to dress it up a bit. This goes for you guys, too! Hats, bracelets, earrings, sunglasses, a super cool jacket, a different shade of lipstick, whatever your favorite things are.

If you’re comfortable in dresses, bring them! They look great in photographs and offer a nice variety from your other casual clothing choices. We can mix casual and fancy-ish dresses for some great looks.

Shoes! Make sure to bring different shoes for different outfits. Heels are incredibly flattering and can make you stand out and look glamorous. If you're not into heels, having a great shoe that really dresses up your outfit can make a huge difference. Flats can also work well if you mix them with the right outfit. Although they are super comfy and we all love them, let's leave the flip-flops home ;)

Fluorescent colors should be avoided as they create a very undesirable color cast. Bring a variety of colors and mix the level of styles. Some should be dressy, some dressy-casual, and some casual. Make sure you’re comfortable in your clothing and that it flatters you. This will ensure that you like how you look when viewing your photos. Try things on at home before your session. If you’re self-conscious about your arms, avoid sleeveless shirts or tank tops, as the eye will be drawn to skin in the images.

Make sure you bring any other accessories that are important to you for your portraits. Your letterman jacket, your class ring, and anything that goes along with your favorite hobbies. Having these things provide a lot of variety to your session and helps tell our story of you and your favorite things!

If you do any sports, play an instrument, any extracurricular, I encourage you to bring it along. We want to capture everything that is you and your senior year!

Sometimes your favorite thing in the whole world is your pup! <3

Hair. Don't try a new hairstyle the same day as your session. Try out different hairstyles a couple weeks in advance so you get a feel for what works and what you love. Avoid drastic hair changes right before your session, as well. Things like a new hair color or cutting a lot off. This goes a long with having your session reflect everything that is you.

Make-up. Make-up that is done well can make a huge difference to the need for retouching. It should be worn just a little heavier than normal wear to help it photograph well. Avoid makeup with an SPF because it tends to create shine in photos. If make-up is not your thing, just a light powder can be considered to help control shine but definitely not necessary if you don't want to wear any make-up. :)

Nails! If you plan to wear nail polish, please apply it as close to your session as possible to avoid paint chipping. Whatever color you desire, go for it!

Here we see Logan sporting a plaid shirt that looks great in the image and fits his personality. If you have any questions at all about outfits for your session, feel free to shoot me a message.

As well as Tyler with a shirt perfectly fitting for his personality! Looking good guys!

Thanks so much for reading and I can't wait for your senior portrait session!
